Sierra Leone and Egypt met on Tuesday, 14 November 2023 and discussed means of boosting bilateral cooperation in the fisheries domain.

The discussion was between Sierra Leone’s Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba and Chairman of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Company, Major General Islam Ateyya in a building integrated fish farming and aquaculture development.

Madam Dugba expressed keenness in bringing the most appropriate fishing vessels and equipment to fish, developing a viable aquaculture to increase rural fishing in cage and pond, instituting high technology surveillance and monitoring systems aimed at increasing self-sufficiency rate and providing more job opportunities as part of efforts to achieve food security for Sierra Leone.

The two sides agreed on forming a joint committee that will develop a new strategy that will be environmentally conducive. “we can do it better when we work together,” said Mdm. Dugba.

In the same vein, the two sides agreed on providing technical support to Sierra Leone in a diverse field of fishing and Aquaculture (Fish Certification).

The dialogue also focused on offering training and cultural exchange programs as part of an intensive training program.

For his part, Major General Islam Ateyya expressed willingness to cooperate with Sierra Leone in all fields of the Fisheries and Aquaculture development. He asserted that it is the directive of the President of Egypt to cooperate with sister countries in order to accelerate the one Africa spirit.

The minister of Fisheries and her accompanying delegation will wrap up their visit to Egypt on Thursday, during which they will meet and review work in progress and discuss more ways in increasing the bilateral cooperation.
