In a significant diplomatic engagement, Ambassador Harold Saffa, Sierra Leone’s representative to Ethiopia, in his address to the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, during a recent meeting in Cairo, underscored that in order for AU and Arab League to create a maximum impact on the global stage, there is the necessity for enhanced collaboration between the African Union (AU) and the Arab League. The meeting aimed to address pressing issues affecting the region, including the ongoing crises in Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Palestine, and Lebanon.

The session commenced with a briefing by Secretary General Ahmad Aboul Gheir, who provided insights into the current geopolitical landscape and the challenges facing member states. Ambassador Saffa emphasized that a united front between the AU and Arab League is crucial for formulating effective strategies to address these challenges and promote peace and stability across Africa and the Arab world.

In addition to the discussions with the AU ambassadors, Ambassador Saffa had a productive audience with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and explored potential avenues for cooperation between countries in the region.

Following the diplomatic discussions in Cairo, the AU delegation visited the Egyptian National Police Training College, where they learned about training programs dedicated to peacekeeping efforts. Ambassadors Saffa met Four Sierra Leone Police officers, Inspector. Ishmael Kefala, ASP. Martin Fayia, Inspector. Francis. A. Blake and Esther Brima who were studying at the cairo Police training college. H. E. Saffa encouraged the officers to work assiduously and bring the knowledge and expertise gained to boost the image of the Sierra Leone Police.The visit highlighted the importance of shared knowledge and skills in enhancing peacekeeping capabilities amid regional conflicts.

On October 3, 2024, the AU delegation departed from Cairo to Port Sudan, where they engaged with General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, along with various civil society leaders. The dialogue aimed to identify a comprehensive roadmap for achieving peace in Sudan, marking a significant step towards addressing the country’s pressing issues.

Ambassador Saffa’s commitment to fostering collaboration amongst regional organizations has once again highlighted Sierra Leone’s proactive approach to promoting peace and stability in Africa. The outcomes of these discussions are anticipated to contribute positively to the ongoing efforts for peace and unity in the region.
